POCKER SAHIB MEMORIAL ORPHANAGE COLLEGE TIRURANGADI

Institutional Distinctiveness

Ever since its establishment in July 1968 as a junior college affiliated to the University of Kerala in grant in aid sector under the management of the Tirurangadi Muslim Orphanage committee, Pocker Sahib Memorial Orphanage College Tirurangadi has been playing a pivotal role in the social and educational development of the region. Two years after its Golden Jubilee celebrations, the institution has become a premier institution for higher education, under the University of Calicut.

Established and maintained by the Tirurangadi Muslim Orphanage Committee, the institution has been keen-eyed in catering to the educational needs of the weaker sections of society.  It imparts value-based education for the empowerment of girl students and the upliftment of socially and economically backward communities including orphans which ultimately makes them a part and parcel of the Nationa Building Process.  The institution, thus fulfils its obligation as a higher education institution, going hand in hand with its core values of establishment namely service, self-respect, social justice, care and competence.

One of the most distinguishing features of the institution is its accessibility with the road, rail and air facilities at a distance close at hand. This has immensely helped the institution to organize academic and non-academic activities which contribute to the welfare of the community at large.

The institution, is located towards the semi-urban coastal belt of the Malabar in the southwest part of our country, has organised several activities for the overall development of the neighbouring community, besides imparting quality education to its students from the region. The AKSHARASAMUDRAM project of the institution focussing the educational needs of the tenth standard students of the coastal area high schools through specialised mentoring schemes has resulted in the improvement of the pass percentage of the beneficiary institution. The project has also resulted in the development of goodwill about higher education among the students who are the beneficiaries of the practice and their parents.

At present, more than 85% of the student strength of the institution is contributed by the girls and are showing good progression to research and higher education. A large number of students, are developing research temper and aptitudes in the form of research fellowships under the schemes like PRATHIBHA, ASPIRE and INSPIRE.

The institution employs a strategy to offer quality education to the weaker sections of the society especially orphans by reserving seats for them under the Management quota. Preference is also given to deprived groups in the recruitment of teachers and non-teaching staff.
