Africans have been a vital part of the fabric of South Asian societies since the early modern era. Some came as traders, others as soldiers, and still others as slaves. Among the best known Africans in India, in particular, is Malik Ambar. Becoming Afro-South Asian over time, Ambar would rise in power as a ruler in the Deccan. He was joined by other ‘Abyssinians’ or ‘Habshis’ and ‘Siddis,’ as African-descended peoples have become known in South Asia. In this keynote address, Dr. Ali had discussed this history as part of a global African Diaspora that includes other Afro-South Asian political leaders.
