About The Department
The Department of English, one of the largest departments in the college, came into being with the establishment of the college itself in 1968. Since its inception, the department has been the hub of teaching and learning activity attracting a cross-section of students across the Malabar region. It has established itself as a stronghold of English Language and Literature with the commencement of the M.A programme in 1993. At present, the department offers both B.A and M.A in English Language and Literature. The department was recognized as a research centre in 2021.
Following the syllabus offered by the University of Calicut, at the Postgraduate level, the department offers courses in British Literature, American Literature, Indian and Postcolonial Literature along with the Western and Eastern theories, enabling the students equipped with the potential to crack the UGC-NET Exam. One of the outstanding features of our M.A Programme is the Research Forum that encourages the students to undertake individual initiatives in the research field making them familiar with the basics of research methods and methodologies.
The faculty members of the department share a commitment to the teaching and learning process with all of them actively engaged in research activities. In addition to the scheduled office hours, our faculties stay at their office for an extra hour every day offering individual consultations and study tips to the students. So far the department has produced more than forty NET holders in English, a commendable achievement in the track record of the department, most of them being employed in various colleges and Higher Secondary Schools in India as well as abroad.
